When something goes wrong with a name

The names site is a reader with transactions on it. Nothing here can lose you a name you already own, and the worst a failed registration costs is the gas on the transaction that failed. This page covers the messages you can meet.

While registering

This name cannot be registered. It breaks one of the name rules: at least three characters, no spaces or dots, at most 255 characters, and it has to pass ENS name normalisation. The normalisation refuses a few things that look harmless: a name that mixes writing systems (one Cyrillic letter among Latin ones, for instance), look-alike characters whose only purpose is to imitate another name, and a hyphen as both the third and the fourth character. Try the name without the odd character.

The commitment expired. More than 24 hours passed between your commitment and the registration. Nothing was lost except the gas on the commitment. Press Start over and send a new one; the wait is a minute.

A registration for this name was started in this browser by another wallet. The page remembers a commitment per browser and per name, and the wallet that sent it is the only one that can finish it. Connect that wallet, or press Start over to begin with the one you have connected now.

Your balance is not enough for this registration. The total is the yearly price times the term, plus any premium, plus room for the network fee. Reduce the term, or fund the wallet.

The transaction was reverted. The chain refused the registration. The usual cause is that someone else registered the name in the gap between your search and your commitment, or that the price rose above what your wallet sent. Search the name again to see which.

I closed the tab during the wait. Nothing is lost. Open the same name in the same browser with the same wallet, within 24 hours, and the countdown or the register button is where you left it.

I switched browsers or devices during the wait. The commitment lives in the browser that made it, so the other one knows nothing about it. Go back to the first browser, or start over on the new one. The unused commitment expires by itself and costs nothing further.

While managing

Point the name at your address before setting it as your primary name. A primary name has to resolve to the wallet claiming it. Set the address record first, then the primary name.

Set, but the name does not point back at this address. Your primary name is set, but its address record was changed afterwards, so sites will not trust it. Point the name at your wallet again.

The fields are greyed out on a name I was just sent. You hold the name but not yet its records. Press Reclaim and they open up. See Manage your name.

No resolver. The name has nowhere to store records. Press Set public resolver; it is one transaction.

I transferred a name to the wrong address. There is no undo. If the address belongs to someone, ask them to transfer it back. If it belongs to nobody, the name is gone for as long as the registration lasts, and available to anyone once it expires and its grace period ends. Check addresses before you press transfer, not after.

Names and sites

A site shows my address instead of my name. Either the name is not set as primary, or the primary name no longer points at this wallet, or you are on a site that does not resolve names at all. Check My names for the first two.

My name points at the wrong wallet. Names point at whatever address is in their record. Open the name, check Address, and change it if it is wrong. If you do not own the name, whoever does controls where it points.

Somebody registered a name that looks like mine, or like a known project. Anyone can. A name is not a verification of anything, and the safe habit is to check the address a name points at before you send to it, the same way you would check any address. The site itself

The ENS contracts are not available on this network. Your wallet is connected to a chain that does not have the name service. Switch it to L2 Protocol, chain id 12216. See Connect to the network.
